Plymouth Argyle scored five times to beat Crystal Palace's Under-21s in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night. The 5-1 win at Home Park extends the club's winning run to four matches in all competitions.
Caleb Watts scored twice for the hosts, who are now third in League One with 13 points from seven games. Xavier Amaechi opened the scoring after 11 minutes, finishing from a Seb Campbell pass. Watts doubled the lead on 26 minutes, converting a cross from Owen Oseni, and added his second 11 minutes later after a Jared Rendle assist.
Crystal Palace U21 pulled a goal back through Donte Martin just before the hour mark, but Plymouth responded quickly. Campbell scored a goal of his own on 66 minutes, and substitute Aribim Pepple completed the rout with six minutes remaining, set up again by Campbell.
Manager Tom Cleverley fielded a strong side in a 4-4-2 formation, with James Storer in goal. The team dominated possession with 54 percent and created 22 shots, 12 of which were on target. The result puts Plymouth in a strong position in the EFL Trophy's Southern Group.
The performance continues an excellent spell of form. Plymouth have now won their last four matches, scoring 14 goals in the process. Pepple, who came off the bench to score, is the club's top scorer this season with three goals in seven appearances.
Attention now turns back to the league campaign. Plymouth host Burton Albion this Saturday, looking to maintain their push near the top of the table.
