A Plymouth-born footballer has been banned from all football for five years following a violent attack on a supporter. The Football Association imposed the suspension on 21-year-old Calum Merrin after he was convicted of grievous bodily harm without intent for an incident during an Isuzu FA Vase match.

The attack occurred during Brixham's 3-0 home victory over Elburton Villa on November 9, 2024. An independent Regulatory Commission handed down the five-year ban, which is backdated to the date of the offence. Merrin accepted a charge of breaching FA Rule E3.1 for violent conduct and threatening or abusive behaviour towards a fan. The victim suffered serious injuries that required surgery and the insertion of six metal screws.

Club departure confirmed

Merrin, who was with Elburton Villa at the time of the attack, signed for Liskeard Athletic this summer. The club has since confirmed he no longer represents them. A spokesperson for the FA stated, "Calum Merrin has been sanctioned for a breach of FA Rule E3.1 during a fixture between Brixham FC and Elburton Villa on November 9, 2024." The commission also fined Elburton Villa £150 and imposed 10 disciplinary points on the club. The FA's disciplinary action was informed by a prior criminal court ruling after receiving the relevant documentation.

Legal background

In June 2024, Merrin was convicted at Plymouth Magistrates' Court. He received a two-year prison sentence, suspended for two years, and was ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid work and pay £1,500 in compensation. A restraining order was also issued prohibiting contact with the victim. The court heard that the assault was an unprovoked attack on a spectator who was watching the match.
