Plymouth Argyle are poised to announce two new signings on Monday, but the club will also be without key midfielder Malachi Boateng for an extended period.
Boateng, 24, suffered a knee ligament injury early in the 1-1 League One draw away to Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park. The midfielder, who had made his 48th consecutive league start for Argyle, left the ground on crutches and a brace on his right knee.
The injury came a day after another Pilgrims midfielder, Brendan Wiredu, completed a transfer to League Two side Salford City. Boateng joins former club record signing Michael Baidoo (hamstring), Freddie Issaka (groin) and Owen Oseni (thigh) on the casualty list.
Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley gave an update on Boateng after the game, describing the injury as significant and a knee ligament injury. He added that the club would focus on giving the players the best processes to recover.
Following Wiredu’s departure, Argyle have moved swiftly to bring in two new recruits. Cleverley said, “They should both happen Monday, I’m fairly confident of that.” He added, “Obviously there will be a midfielder coming in and a wide player. Medicals took place last evening. Deals should be announced Monday.”
Injuries have been a constant issue for Argyle, and losing Boateng would be a significant loss early in the new campaign. Cleverley noted that the group of players and staff are strong, but injuries and poor refereeing decisions can affect results.
The coach was unhappy over two refereeing decisions against Wycombe, including a goal ruled out for offside and a missed penalty for a high challenge on Bradley Ibrahim.
Deals should be announced Monday.
