Plymouth Argyle's Cleverley Focused on Squad Performance

Plymouth Argyle manager Tom Cleverley has declared he is happy with the squad he has to work with at the moment, and as it stands, the club will only look to make another signing 'if it's the right one'. The Pilgrims have completed deals for seven players over the summer ahead of the start of their 2026/27 League One campaign.

What happened?

Cleverley believes he has got 'healthy competition' for places in the team, even though attacking pair Michael Baidoo (hamstring) and Owen Oseni (thigh) have recently been ruled out of action. To at least part compensate for that, Caleb Watts has recovered from an ankle injury which he picked up early in pre-season and could be included among the substitutes for the League One season-opener against Stockport County at Home Park on Saturday.

Why it matters for Plymouth

Argyle have brought in seven signings over the summer, most recently striker Will Evans in a £400,000 transfer from Mansfield Town, and Cleverley was asked at a Press conference today whether there would be any more new recruits. "Only if it's the right one," he replied. "Every head coach up and down the country will say 'We can always strengthen' but right now I'm really happy with where the squad is.

What comes next?

"We have got just the right number. We have got healthy competition, we have got quality over quantity. I'm pleased with where they are at. I'm focused on the performance of the team rather than the (transfer) market. Of course, if the right one became available, or we needed to replace one of ours, then we are ready, but just focused on the performance of the team Saturday really."

Current Context

Plymouth Argyle are currently 9th in League One, with 63 points from 42 games, and a goal difference of +8. They have scored 66 goals and conceded 58. They are 30 points behind leaders Lincoln and have a next fixture against Doncaster at home on 13th February 2027.
