Lorent Tolaj’s Plymouth Argyle exit edges closer after £4m bid accepted
Plymouth Argyle will receive over £4 million for striker Lorent Tolaj after Championship side Bristol City had their £4m-plus offer accepted this week. The 24-year-old Swiss international is now set to undergo a medical in London ahead of completing a move that will see Argyle recoup part of the transfer fee via a sell-on clause owed to Port Vale.
Argyle sit seventh in League One with zero points as the 2026/27 season looms, and Tolaj’s departure leaves a major attacking void just weeks before their next fixture against Leicester at Home Park on 9 February 2027.
What happened with the Lorent Tolaj transfer?
Bristol City moved first for Tolaj this summer after he starred for Argyle in 2025/26. The Pilgrims activated a £1.2m release clause to sign him from Port Vale last August, and he repaid that faith with 21 goals across all competitions last term - 17 of them in League One despite missing chunks of February and March through injury.
Argyle accepted Bristol City’s bid this week, with the Robins now planning a medical in London. Part of the fee will flow back to Port Vale via a sell-on clause, though the exact amount remains undisclosed. Tolaj has already featured in pre-season for Argyle, playing the first half of their 4-1 win at Plymouth Parkway last Saturday without finding the net.
Why this matters for Plymouth Argyle
Tolaj’s exit leaves Argyle searching for a replacement striker with proven League One pedigree. His 21-goal haul made him the club’s top scorer last season, and his departure comes as Argyle prepare for a tough 2026/27 campaign with a home tie against sixth-placed Leicester on 9 February 2027.
The loss also compounds Argyle’s need to rebuild quickly, especially after their recent Women’s signings and EFL Trophy group-stage fixtures were confirmed. With no goals scored or conceded so far this season, every signing and departure carries extra weight as manager Ryan Lowe plots his squad for the new campaign.
What comes next for Tolaj and Bristol City?
Tolaj is set to complete his move to Ashton Gate in the coming days, with Bristol City’s pre-season clash against Argyle at Home Park on 1 August marking his first return to the ground in a Robins shirt. Among his new teammates will be Plymouth-born midfielder Adam Randell, who joined Bristol City last summer after Argyle’s relegation from the Championship.
Bristol City, now under new head coach Michael Skubala, have also been linked with other League One strikers this summer, including Dom Ballard and Jayden Wareham. Tolaj’s Championship move caps a rapid rise from Aldershot in the National League to League Two with Port Vale, then League One with Argyle, and now the second tier with Bristol City.
