Plymouth Argyle came from behind twice to force a penalty shootout after Newport County led 2-0 through early goals from Kieron Evans and Yahya Bamba. Harvey White scored for Plymouth at 91' from a penalty, followed by Xavier Amaechi at 93' and Aribim Pepple at 95' to complete a remarkable comeback.

Newport County took a 2-0 lead through goals by Kieron Evans in the 4th minute and Yahya Bamba from the penalty spot in the 59th minute. Plymouth Argyle equalised in the second half through Bim Pepple in the 75th minute, assisted by Xavier Amaechi, before Tyreeq Bakinson levelled in the 90th minute with another Amaechi assist.

Shaun MacDonald saved a penalty from Bim Pepple in the final moments to send the game to a shootout, where James Storer saved the first spot-kick for Newport County from Michael Adu-Poku. Plymouth Argyle won the shootout 5-4 after Bradley Ibrahim scored the decisive fifth penalty, following successful kicks from White, Irow, and Pepple.

The match stats showed Plymouth had 68% possession and 12 shots to Newport County's 9, with five shots on target.
