Plymouth Argyle secured their first home win of the League One season with a 2-0 victory over Bradford City at Home Park. Goals from Julio Pleguezuelo and Harvey White in each half were enough to earn the three points for Tom Cleverly's side.
The breakthrough came just before half-time when Pleguezuelo found the net. Plymouth had created several chances earlier in the game but their finishing had let them down until the defender's strike. White then doubled the advantage in the second period with a low drive from distance.
Manager Tom Cleverly had written in his match programme notes that he could see improvements in his team over recent games. That progress was evident in a performance that saw Plymouth control large parts of the contest. "He has certainly seen an improvement here today," said the BBC Final Score commentator at the ground.
Bradford, who had started the season strongly, were unable to impose their usual high-energy game. Former Bradford midfielder Paul Bolland, analysing for BBC Radio Leeds, said his old side lacked quality in possession. "We were beaten by the better team today," Bolland stated. "I thought we were very loose in possession, it was always a touch or a pass that wasn't quite there."
The win provides a welcome boost for Argyle as they look to climb the table. The result moves them clear of the early-season strugglers and offers a platform to build on ahead of their next match.
Cleverly will hope the confidence from this performance carries into the coming weeks. The squad, showed the resilience the manager had been seeking. Plymouth's next fixture is scheduled for Tuesday evening as they continue their League One campaign.
