Plymouth Argyle striker Bim Pepple is targeting a return to the Canada national team as he builds on a strong start to the season. Head coach Tom Cleverley believes the 23-year-old can force his way back into international contention by continuing his form for the League One side.
Pepple ended last season with 15 goals in 21 games for Argyle and has started this campaign with three goals in six appearances. He scored in each of Plymouth's last two matches, a 3-0 win over Barnsley and a 3-2 victory at Doncaster, helping the team to seventh place in the table with 10 points. The forward was called up for Canada's final squad before the World Cup in March but did not make the final tournament selection. He has not been included in Jesse Marsch's squad for the upcoming matches against Chile, Peru and the United States.
Cleverley acknowledged the challenge Pepple faces, with many of his international rivals playing at a higher level. "I've been around international players a lot in my career and a lot of those guys in the Canada squad will be in top five European Leagues or the Championship," the manager said. "Bim's behind the eight ball a little bit with that."
Cleverley noted that Pepple's situation is not unique, recalling his own experience as a player. "I was in a similar situation when I was at Watford." he explained.
The coach's message to the striker is clear. All Pepple can do is maximise his output for Plymouth. Cleverley wants to see goals, assists, effective hold-up play and relentless pressing. If he delivers that consistently, a recall could follow. "He got a call-up whilst being a League One player, an Argyle player, and one of his targets will be to do the same again this season," Cleverley added.
Cleverley also highlighted Pepple's professional attitude and work ethic as key factors. "His application in training is first class. He's always looking to improve, and he takes on information really well." the head coach stated.
Pepple's immediate focus is on helping Plymouth maintain their positive momentum. The team's recent form reads three wins and two losses from their last five games, putting them three points behind leaders Sheffield Wednesday. They face a trip to 10th-placed Blackpool this weekend, a match you can preview on our fixtures page. The striker will be looking to make it three goals in three games to further his case for a Canada return.
Looking ahead, Cleverley suggested that a strong season could open up more opportunities for Pepple, both internationally and for his club career. "If he keeps scoring and developing, he'll put himself in the shop window." Cleverley concluded.
